ABOUT MAHITA
Mahita is a non-profit social development organisation working in the state of Telangana in Southern India. It was established in 1994 to initiate the development interventions in the urban slums of Hyderabad. Since then, Mahita has developed expertise in a wide range of development initiatives acquired through 24 years of devoted work and professionalism.
It has broad geographical coverage of 82 urban slums of Hyderabad, Rangareddy district, Nalgonda and Adilabad district. It is also working in three districts of Andhra Pradesh. Since the inception, it has adopted the rights-based approach for work towards a socially just and empowered society, thus reflecting local cultural values and practices.
It is creating opportunities to the poor and marginalized with a special focus on girls for their development with dignity and respect. It strongly believes that community participation is essential for any rights-based approach and leads to social transformation. This philosophy is being implemented in all the organization’s programme areas.
MAJOR OBJECTIVES:
a) Protect fundamental rights of all the poor and marginalized communities to ensure an enhanced quality of life.
b) Provide and facilitate opportunities for all the children to access quality and relevant education without any discrimination, socio, economic and cultural obligations.
c) Promote and facilitate equal opportunities for girl children and women for enhancing opportunities for development.
MAHITA’S CORE COMPETENCIES AND VALUES
a) Mahita fosters strategic alliances for collaboration to increase the scale and impact of community-focused Child Protection development programs.
b) Mahita promotes technically sound community ownership approaches that are flexible, responsive to local needs and influences, and protect the rights of children.
c) Strengthening the Networking and Advocacy strategies towards influencing the government, policymakers and NGOs on Child Rights.
Board Members
Dr. Ch. Mastan Rao – President: A renowned Hydro Geologist and had vast experience in the field of Water Management and Remote Sensing Technology. He holds M.Sc., (Hydro Geology). and Ph.D in Geology and was served as a Scientist in Hyderabad Remote Sensing Agency. Having a philanthropic outlook towards social development, he has been associated with many research projects and watershed management projects across the Country.
Dr(Ms)J.Revathy –Vice-President: A Retired Principal and Professor and holds M.Com., M.Phil and Ph.D. An accomplished academician, Teacher, Principal, and Educator with expertise in Higher Education and demonstrated success in the development of students. She has extensive experience in the creation and design of successful student programs with a track record of delivering positive results. A like-minded Professor and lot of commitment on society and associated with humanitarian interventions for the betterment of society.
Mr. Ramesh Sekhar Reddy – GENERAL SECRETARY is double post-graduation in M.A., Sociology and Economics and done his Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development and Management. 25 years of work experience in the field of development both in urban and rural areas with a specialization in networking, strategy planning, Advocacy, and Research on children’s issues. He is Associated with many campaigns in the state as well as the Nation in different positions. He is instrumental for CSO Networking on Child Rights in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Ms. L.Jyothi – Joint Secretary: A Post Graduation in Ms in chemistry from Lamar University Beaumont, Texas, USA. She worked as an Assistant professor at Navbharat Pharmacy College, Hyderabad, and associated with many NGOs on children and women issues in the State of Telangana.
Mr. M. Uma Shankar – TREASURER: A Post Graduate in Commerce and completed his Post Graduation Diploma in Computers and was served as software engineers, associated with a Multinational software development firms. At present he has been associated with an Agricultural College in the capacity of Managing Partner. He was associated with Mahita from the inception and part of many programs and interventions of the Organisation.
Ms. S.Uma Rani – MEMBER: A Graduate in social work from Osmania University, having a very rich experience in social development. She has also been associated with many Urban and Rural NGO’s and made many remarkable achievements. As a social thinker, she had very effectively worked for the rights of women.
Ms.Rafia Nausheen – Member: is an Urdu Paper Columnist, Writer and Social Thinker. She holds M.A. Women’s Education and Diploma in Mass Communication and Translation from Hyderabad University. A good orator and counselor with extensive experience of working with adolescents and women in the field of Development for the last 2 decades.
