ABOUT MAHITA

Mahita, an organization committed to nurturing a just society that reveres and preserves local cultures, has been dedicated to this cause for over 29 years. Our multifaceted initiatives encompass gender equality, education, human rights, livelihoods, and humanitarian support, all grounded in holistic development principles. Since our inception in 1994, Mahita has been instrumental in driving transformative change within urban slums and rural communities across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, India. At the heart of our mission lies the empowerment of marginalized communities, with a particular focus on fostering dignity and respect for girls and women.

Over the years, Mahita has implemented numerous successful interventions. We have facilitated the enrollment of thousands of child laborers into formal government schools, prevented early child marriages, and initiated infrastructure improvements in 80 government schools, such as the provision of toilets and drinking water facilities. To elevate the quality of education, we have introduced STEM and Digital labs in 10 government schools and offer scholarships to girls in the 10th grade, encouraging them to pursue higher studies. Additionally, we have educated children on their rights and governance and provided menstrual hygiene management training to thousands of girls.

Addressing the issue of malnutrition and stunting among children from migrant construction laborers, Mahita operates a center providing cooked nutritional meals and health services to children from marginalized communities.

One of our notable success stories is our youth-focused future skills training program, which has transformed lives and improved the economic status of families by connecting young individuals with employment opportunities. Furthermore, Mahita is actively engaged in smart agriculture and climate initiatives. This includes projects such as bore well recharge, renovation of irrigation water wells, soil conservation efforts, and training sessions on organic farming for farmers.

Mahita’s enduring commitment to fostering sustainable development and social justice has made a tangible impact on the communities we serve. Our interventions have not only empowered individuals but have also contributed to the broader goal of creating a more equitable society. As we look to the future, Mahita remains steadfast in its dedication to championing the rights of the marginalized and promoting inclusive development for all.
